11th Street & Yale Avenue Streetscape
Status: COMPLETE
Project Description:
The City of Tulsa was awarded a $385,000 Federal Scenic Byways Grant by utilizing Vision 2025 as leverage. The inclusion of the City’s Fix Our Streets funding helped expand the project to include intersection and street improvements. Work was completed in August 2013.
Thematic and interpretive features are utilized to incorporate all four corners of the intersection, the original buildings and neighborhood elements into a walkable, decorative, historical and educational experience. Project elements include seating, fencing with brick columns, a town clock, interpretive panels, and textured crosswalks. The intersection has a specially designed concrete Route 66 shield with the names of the eight states of Route 66 embedded around it. This project benefits the byway traveler by creating an urban destination point on Route 66 for motorists traveling west through Tulsa. Travelers will have a chance to park, learn more about the significance of Route 66 to the region, stroll through the surrounding historic neighborhood and park, and enjoy the neighboring cafes and antique shops.
