OU-Tulsa
Status: COMPLETE
Project Description
Funding from Vision 2025 built the educational home of the OU College of Medicine in Tulsa with a direct grant of $30 million. The OU College of Medicine received a federal grant of $1 million and allocated an additional $4 million to complete and equip the building. OU-Tulsa has also added a $5 million, 22,000-square-foot Cancer and Diabetes Center. OU-Tulsa continues to build other facilities as Tulsa becomes an increasingly important part of the Oklahoma University system. This is another example of the realization of the best of what Vision 2025 could accomplish – sparking others to grow facilities within Tulsa County.
The OU-Tulsa institutional mission is to build a nationally recognized center of higher education excellence in select areas that emphasize strong campus-community partnerships, and that leverage the unique opportunities and needs in the Tulsa region.
Tulsa medical students and residents provide vital health services to Tulsa residents, and their interdisciplinary education in medicine, nursing, allied health, public health and pharmacy is considered excellent in each of the respective fields.
The OU-Tulsa Schusterman Center Clinic is a 100,000-square-foot facility offering services in obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, geriatrics, surgery, radiology, psychiatry, psychiatric outreach, cancer, and diabetes.
A new Department of Emergency Medicine has also been established at the OU College of Medicine -Tulsa to provide a residency training program and an Institute for Disaster and Emergency Medicine residents. The three-year residency program accepts six residents each year and began in July 2008.
“The establishment of this department will not only greatly upgrade the quality of emergency and trauma care in Tulsa and eastern Oklahoma, it will train emergency professionals who will serve the entire state,” said OU President David L. Boren. The Oklahoma Institute for Disaster and Emergency Medicine will focus on research and education in emergency medicine, trauma care, disaster preparedness and child injury prevention. OU-Tulsa is proving quite a variety of contributions to the region in terms of education, improved healthcare and economic development.
